URGENT CARE · DÜSSELDORF-OBERKASSEL
In pain? Call us — we sort it out on the phone.
For severe pain, swelling or a broken tooth we keep appointments free at short notice. Calling is faster than any form: we work out on the phone whether you need to come in today or whether it can wait until tomorrow. We speak English.
Outside our opening hours: Central Dental Emergency Service, Florastraße 36, 40217 Düsseldorf — no appointment, expect a wait. Mon–Fri 20:00–23:00, Sat/Sun and public holidays 09:00–23:00, Wed and Fri also 14:00–20:00. Full details on the contact page.
If you have difficulty breathing, severe swelling with fever, or a head injury after an accident, do not wait: call 112.
What you can do right now
First aid for the time until your appointment. None of it replaces treatment, but it stops things getting worse.
Severe toothache
Cool from the outside, never with ice directly on the skin. No heat, no alcohol, and do not lie flat — lying down increases the pressure and with it the pain. Painkillers only as stated on the packet, and not on an empty stomach. Where you can, avoid preparations containing acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin): they inhibit clotting and can make bleeding worse — particularly after an extraction. If ASA has been prescribed to you, for your heart for instance, do not stop it on your own. Tell us, and we plan the treatment around it.
Tooth knocked out
Hold it by the crown only, never the root, and do not clean or wipe it. Put it in a tooth rescue box, otherwise in cold long-life milk — not in water. Then call immediately: for replanting, every half hour counts. This does not apply to a baby tooth: a knocked-out milk tooth is not put back, because doing so can damage the permanent tooth developing underneath. Still come the same day — we check that the socket and the permanent tooth are unharmed.
Tooth broken
Keep the fragment and bring it with you; it can sometimes be bonded back on. Cover sharp edges temporarily with sugar-free chewing gum so they do not cut your tongue.
Swelling in the face
Cool from the outside and keep your head raised. Swelling is a sign of infection and always needs to be seen promptly — do not wait to see whether it goes down on its own.
Crown or filling lost
Not an emergency, but it should be dealt with soon. Keep the crown; it can often be re-cemented. Chew softly on that side, and please do not try to glue it back yourself.
Bleeding after a procedure
Fold a clean handkerchief, place it on the wound and bite down firmly for 20 minutes without checking in between. Do not rinse. If it has not stopped after that, call us.
GO TO A&E IMMEDIATELY — DO NOT WAIT
If the swelling spreads towards the eye or the throat, if swallowing or breathing becomes difficult, if fever and chills develop, or if you can no longer open your mouth: this can be a spreading infection. It belongs in hospital, not in a waiting list for an appointment.
Prefer to write? We will call you back.
If calling is difficult right now — you are at work, the phone makes you anxious, or German is not your first language: leave your number and we will get back to you.
During opening hours usually within the hour. Outside them, on the next working day, first thing in the morning. With acute pain please still call — that is always faster.
Common questions in an emergency
I am not a patient of yours — will you still see me?
Yes. For acute problems we also treat patients coming to us for the first time. Please bring your insurance card and, if you have them, any X-rays or records from your previous dentist.
How quickly can I get an appointment?
We keep time free every day for acute cases. How quickly depends on what you describe on the phone — swelling with severe pain takes priority over a lost filling.
What does emergency treatment cost?
For patients with German statutory insurance, the examination and pain treatment are covered. Anything beyond that we discuss once the pain is gone — in an emergency you sign nothing that can wait.
Do you speak English, Spanish or Portuguese?
Yes, all four languages. Just tell us on the phone which one is easier for you.
