After a tooth extraction

Dear patient, after a tooth is removed a blood clot seals the wound. It is the single most important protection for healing. The guidance below helps you keep it intact in the first few days.

Your dentist Extracted on Check-up on
The first two hours
  • Bite down firmly on the gauze pad for 30 minutes.
  • Do not rinse, do not spit, do not suck on the area and do not probe it with your tongue.
  • Do not eat or drink until the anaesthetic has worn off completely.
On the day of the procedure
  • Cool the area for 10–15 minutes at a time with breaks in between, always with the ice pack wrapped in a cloth.
  • Avoid physical exertion, exercise, sauna, hot baths and direct sun.
  • No alcohol, no nicotine – smoking delays healing considerably.
  • Sleep with your upper body slightly raised.
  • Drink without a straw.
Eating and drinking
  • Soft, lukewarm food. Chew on the opposite side.
  • Avoid nuts, seeds, crisps, rice and muesli – crumbs can get into the wound.
  • Go easy on dairy if you are taking an antibiotic, and keep to the intervals between doses.

The days that follow

Pain and swelling
  • Pain is normal. Take ibuprofen as agreed. No Aspirin® or ASA – it promotes bleeding.
  • Swelling peaks on day 2–3 and then subsides.
  • Avoid heat for the first 7 days.
Oral hygiene
  • Keep brushing as normal, but avoid the wound area to begin with.
  • Rinsing no earlier than day 3, and only if agreed with us.
Please contact us immediately
  • if bleeding does not stop after 30 minutes of biting down
  • if you get increasing, throbbing pain from day 3–4 – this can indicate a healing problem
  • if you develop a fever, increasing swelling or difficulty swallowing
  • if numbness persists
Replacing the missing tooth
A gap rarely stays harmless: neighbouring teeth drift, the opposing tooth grows into the space and the jawbone recedes over time. That is why we discuss a replacement as soon as the wound has healed.
The usual options are an implant, a bridge or a removable restoration. Which is right for you depends on the bone available, the neighbouring teeth and what you want.
Your next step
Stitches are removed after 7–10 days. Please attend every check-up appointment. Bring your questions about replacing the tooth to your next visit – we will take the time to answer them.
We wish you a smooth and speedy recovery.
