Act immediately
Knocked-out tooth
- Do not wash the tooth. Handle it by the crown only, never by the root.
- Storage: ideally in a tooth rescue box or sterile saline solution. Long-life milk also works, or – for children – saliva.
- Come to us or the emergency service straight away. If there are other injuries, nausea or loss of consciousness, go to A&E.
- At the practice the tooth can be repositioned and splinted so that it reattaches.
Chipped or broken tooth
- Place the broken piece in sterile saline solution or, if you have none, in cold long-life milk.
- Come to the practice as soon as possible.
- If the fragment can no longer be reattached, we will place a filling or rebuild the tooth.
Severe toothache
- With swelling or severe pain, book an appointment immediately – or contact the dental emergency service.
- You can take ibuprofen for the pain (please do not exceed the stated dose).
- At the practice we identify the cause – this may be decay, an inflamed root, periodontitis or a loose restoration.

Problems that need an appointment
Inflamed gums
- For acute inflammation, mouthwash containing chlorhexidine helps.
- Please book an appointment so that we can identify the cause (e.g. tartar, bacteria, irritation from a restoration).
Wisdom teeth
- Please come to the practice without delay. A swelling cheek or pain in the jaw can indicate a spreading infection.
- Cool compresses and rinses with chlorhexidine or chamomile can bring temporary relief.
Sensitive tooth necks
- The usual cause is receding gums, which expose the sensitive necks of the teeth.
- Use toothpaste for sensitive teeth.
- If there is no improvement, the tooth can be sealed at the practice.
- In some cases the gum can be surgically moved back to its original position – please ask us about this.
Your next step
Most emergencies can be avoided. A check-up twice a year and a professional cleaning catch problems before they become painful. Book by phone or with the QR code.
We look forward to seeing you again.
