Dental implants –
before and after surgery

Dear patient, an implant replaces the root of a missing tooth. The first few weeks are decisive for it to heal in safely and for good. The guidance below will see you through that time.

Your dentist Procedure on Check-up on
Before the procedure
  • Tell us about every medicine you take – in particular blood thinners and bisphosphonates. Never stop taking anything on your own.
  • Avoid Aspirin® for 7 days before the procedure (this does not apply to low-dose ASA 100). Ibuprofen is a suitable alternative.
  • Take any prescribed antibiotics exactly as instructed.
  • With a local anaesthetic, eat and drink normally beforehand. If sedation is planned, the fasting times we agreed apply and you will need someone to accompany you.
  • Smoking markedly increases the risk of impaired healing and implant loss. Stopping before and after surgery noticeably improves the outlook.
The first 24 hours
  • Cool your cheek several times a day for 10–15 minutes with an ice pack wrapped in a cloth – never directly on the skin.
  • If bleeding starts, bite on a clean gauze pad for 20–30 minutes. Do not rinse and do not spit.
  • Avoid exercise, sauna, hot baths, alcohol and nicotine. Sleep with your upper body slightly raised.
  • Do not eat until the anaesthetic has worn off completely.
Eating in the first few days
  • Soft, lukewarm food: soup, mashed potato, pasta, scrambled egg, yoghurt.
  • Avoid hard and crumbly food such as nuts, muesli, crisps or seeded bread, and anything very hot.
  • Chew on the opposite side.
  • Drink without a straw – the suction can dislodge the blood clot.

Your healing timeline

Day 1–3
Swelling and mild pain peak and then subside. Cool the area, take it easy, eat soft food.
Day 7–10
The stitches come out. By this point the gum has usually healed on the surface.
Week 6–16
The implant fuses firmly with the bone. Depending on the jaw and the bone available, you will wear a temporary restoration during this time.
After that
We fit your final crown. From then on you care for the implant just like a natural tooth.
Oral hygiene and healing
  • Keep brushing as usual, but avoid the wound area to begin with.
  • Only use mouthwash if agreed with us, and no earlier than 3 days after surgery.
  • After upper-jaw surgery involving the sinus: do not blow your nose for 14 days, and keep your mouth open when you sneeze.
Please contact us immediately
  • if pain increases after day 3
  • if the swelling grows again or you develop a fever
  • if there is heavy bleeding that will not stop
  • if numbness persists beyond the day of surgery
Long term
The long-term success of an implant depends on very good oral hygiene and regular professional cleanings. Attend every check-up so that we spot any changes early.
Your next step
Your appointment to have the stitches removed is already reserved. After that we will see you to check how the implant is healing, before your final crown is made. Call us any time in between if you are unsure.
