Before and after
oral surgery

Dear patient, below you will find advice to help you support the healing process after oral surgery.

Your dentist Procedure on Check-up on
Before the procedure
Eating and drinking. With a local anaesthetic you may eat and drink as normal before your appointment.
Medication. During your consultation, tell us about every medicine and herbal remedy you take regularly.
Blood thinners. Always discuss any blood-thinning medication with your dentist. Never stop taking it on your own – this may only be done after consulting your GP.
Painkillers. Please avoid Aspirin® for 7 days before the procedure (this does not apply to low-dose ASA 100), as it inhibits blood clotting. Ibuprofen is a suitable alternative.
Prescribed medication. If we have given you medication in advance (e.g. antibiotics), take it exactly as prescribed to prevent infection.
After the procedure
Eating and drinking
  • Wait before eating until the local anaesthetic has worn off completely, so that you do not injure yourself.
  • Chew on the opposite side to the wound wherever possible.
  • Avoid hard or crumbly foods such as nuts, muesli or crisps.
  • Soft, cooked food (e.g. pasta, vegetables, fish) is ideal.
  • Do not drink alcohol and do not smoke, as both delay healing.
Bleeding
  • Light bleeding can occur after any procedure in the mouth.
  • If bleeding starts, bite down on a clean cotton cloth or on the gauze we gave you.
  • Avoid physical exertion and heat.
  • Sleep with your upper body slightly raised.
  • Frequent spitting or rinsing can make bleeding worse – please avoid it.
Pain
  • Pain after a procedure is normal. Take the prescribed painkillers regularly and as agreed.
  • Avoid painkillers containing acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) (e.g. Aspirin®), as they can promote bleeding.

The days after your procedure

Swelling and bruising
  • Swelling is normal in the first few days. It usually peaks on day 2–3 and then subsides.
  • Avoid heat for the first 7 days.
  • Cool the area regularly (several times a day for 10–15 minutes) with an ice pack wrapped in a cloth – never place it directly on the skin.
Oral hygiene and rinsing
  • Brush your teeth carefully and thoroughly, but avoid the wound area.
  • Only use mouthwash if we have recommended it. Start no earlier than 3 days after the procedure and use it sparingly, as an addition to your daily brushing.
Driving and operating machinery
  • After a local anaesthetic or sedation (e.g. with midazolam), your reactions may be impaired.
  • After sedation you must not drive for 24 hours and must not operate machinery.
  • Arrange to be collected – we are happy to call you a taxi.
