Fear of the dentist
Dear patient,
fear of treatment is common and nothing you need to justify. You are welcome to come to an appointment where nothing is treated. Here is what to expect — and what explicitly does not happen.
What happens at the first appointment
-
·
A conversation in the consulting room
Not in the dental chair. You tell us what happened in the past. We do not judge it.
-
·
A brief look, if you agree
No instruments, just a mirror. An X-ray if needed, so we can gauge the scale.
-
·
A plan in steps
Smallest first. You decide when the next one follows.
-
·
What does not happen
No drilling at the first appointment. No reproach about how long it has been. No pressure to decide.

What we can do about the fear
1
A hand signal
We agree a signal that stops treatment immediately. Every time, without discussion and without questions.
2
Quiet slots
Early morning or quiet-time appointments, when the practice is calm. Say on the phone that you are anxious — we then allow more time.
3
Sedation
Available for longer procedures. You are awake but relaxed and usually remember only fragments. You will then need someone to accompany you.
What you can prepare yourself
- Write down beforehand what frightens you most. It makes the conversation shorter and easier.
- Eat something first — anxiety is worse on low blood sugar.
- No coffee and no energy drinks before the appointment.
- Do not schedule anything important afterwards.
Tell us if
- you have panicked at a dentist before.
- anaesthetic has not worked properly for you in the past.
- you have a strong gag reflex.
- you feel you cannot get through the appointment — we will split it up.
Your next step
You can cancel at any time and book a new appointment in the same call. We would far rather that than a patient who never comes back. Headphones and your own music are actively encouraged here.
You set the pace. Always.
